While still a tech demo, CDPR’s latest showcase of Witcher 4’s gameplay has made waves in the gaming community as the developer studio once again sets new visual standards for open-world games.

Aside from great visuals, CDPR has finally revealed the big decision behind their shift from their proprietary engine. According to them, REDengine was holding them back in the production segment and was limiting their progress in the direction they were headed.

Why it matters: Even the most prominent developers are ditching their in-house engine for Unreal Engine 5, showcasing how much potential and convenience it has. 

In a new interview with Digital Foundry, Charles Tremblay, VP of Technology at CDPR, stated that the studio intends to become a multi-project studio. However, REDengine wasn’t built for that scenario

Like any other proprietary engine, REDengine is also highly specialised and comes with its own set of problems when the scale is pushed beyond.  

Moreover, they also wanted to extend to multiplayer, and REDengine isn’t built for that.

Unreal Engine 5 development is significantly easier to handle and offers better asset streaming, among other advantages. CDPR has also made adjustments and collaborated with Epic Games to further improve the engine.

As such, expect Witcher 4 to be the best game built on Unreal Engine 5.

Beyond that, CDPR has also revealed their key goals for the Witcher 4, which involve a 60 FPS gameplay. Currently, achieving that target is at the top of their list. They say they’ll work as hard as they can to achieve this goal and don’t want to return to the 30 FPS experience.

Witcher 4 will also be a console-first experience, especially seeing how Cyberpunk 2077 suffered on the consoles at release. They’d rather scale up from the console to a PC experience rather than scale down from a PC.
