- Scaffold Studio’s lead says the Nemesis System exists beyond the Lord of the Rings games.
- Palaver Nelson Jr. says that the concept is present in Assassin’s Creed and other Ubisoft games.
- The game’s mercenary system is akin to the Nemesis System.
The Middle-earth games have aged like fine wine over the years, mainly due to the Nemesis System, a concept that introduces replayability and evolving enemy designs within the game. Unfortunately, WB Games failed to capitalise further on the idea, with the concept locked behind a patent until 2036.
That said, the design of the Nemesis System remains evident throughout various titles. Scaffold Studios’ lead notes that a similar design to the Nemesis System is still present in various Ubisoft games, with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey being a solid example.
Why it matters: Nemesis System is the most unique concept within an RPG to date and still continues to influence other games even a decade later.
Scaffold Studio lead Palaver Nelson Jr. recently talked about the Nemesis System in a new issue of GamesRadar Edge Magazine.
I think you can see some similar design language in the Mercenary system in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and some other things Ubisoft has done since then.
For those unfamiliar, newer Assassin’s Creed games feature a mercenary system that attracts several high-tier targets to players, depending on their notoriety level. These mercenaries can be found roaming around ancient Greece.
Moreover, Ubisoft kept things fresh with the Nemesis System through free updates post-launch, keeping things fresher and reactive over time.
The Nemesis patent still gives other designers significant space to operate around
The same concept was also present in the later Assassin’s Creed games. Nelson’s words do hold some weight in this regard since the hierarchy level is quite similar, and enemies can spawn out of nowhere.
Still, developers continue to innovate on the concept, bringing their various twists. A notable example is EA’s Black Panther game, which is set to debut its own take on the idea.
