- Former FromSoftware developer Hytacka admitted that Rise of Rebellion’s poor performance was evident after its full launch on Steam.
- He also indicated a potential loss of publisher support from Kodansha.
- The game currently holds a “Mixed” rating on Steam, with only 40% of reviews being positive, and an estimated 5,000 copies sold.
Hytacka, a former FromSoftware developer, admits their new game, Rise of Rebellion, got off to a rough start. Since its release on Steam on April 21, 2025, the game has struggled with poor sales and negative reviews.
Despite its big ambitions and the developer’s strong background, Rise of Rebellion has been disappointing. Hytacka openly admitted the game flopped, with weak sales and negative reviews. He also warned that Kodansha, the publisher, might pull back support after this rough start.
Why it matters: The disappointing sales numbers of Rise of Rebellion suggest that game development is not as easy for indie developers as it’s often portrayed.
Hytacka provided an update on the game’s performance on his YouTube channel, highlighting negative reviews and low sales numbers.
Currently, Rise of Rebellion has a “Mixed” rating on Steam, with only 40% of the 119 total reviews being positive. Hytacka says the game sold only 3,000 to 5,000 copies—far below the 40,000+ wishlists it had and his original goal of 100,000 sales.
Before the full release, the developer released a new demo on February 25, 2025, aiming to address the combat system and improve the clunky controls that players had complained about.
But even with these changes, the full game still struggled at launch. Right now, there aren’t enough Metacritic reviews to show any official scores for Rise of Rebellion. The game’s future remains uncertain, with Hytacka indicating that he may lose publisher support for upcoming projects.
Despite the challenges, the former FromSoftware developer plans to continue working on future projects. He states that his desire and ambition to create video games have not waned, and he remains very passionate about his work.
However, he acknowledges that losing publisher support will likely slow down the pace of his future projects. Rise of Rebellion is currently available on Steam for PC, if you want to support the indie developer’s work.
