The Stakes Are Higher Than Ever For Ubisoft!

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft is betting on Assassin’s Creed Shadows to improve its financial situation.
  • Developers from the company state that the situation will go from bad to worse if the game performs moderately.
  • They hope to see this title finding similar success to Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has found itself at the center of Ubisoft’s crumbling financial stability, with the studio now looking at the game to bounce back. Recent reports have revealed that Ubisoft has already considered options, such as a potential merger and selling off IPs.

The latest reports now reveal that developers are already aware of the dire consequences that would follow should Assassin’s Creed Shadows fail to perform exceptionally well.

Why it matters: The latest offering from the series is showing encouraging pre-order figures so far, but Ubisoft’s own statements reveal that this may not be enough to save the company.

According to BFMTV’s latest report, every developer at Ubisoft is currently feeling the pressure, hoping that Assassin’s Creed Shadows can give the studio more of a fighting chance in the future.

The team understands that a middling commercial debut is simply not enough at this point, so Assassin’s Creed Shadows must perform exceptionally well to avert the oncoming crisis.

If the game does averagely, we’re in a really bad way. If Shadows sells well, we can breathe a little.

As the report puts it, the team would be happy to see the game performing on par with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the series’ second best-selling entry. While current pre-order figures show this is achievable, the developers are well aware that the game needs to perform well in the long term.

It’s not common for the studio’s titles to experience an encouraging launch. However, these games typically lack the staying power that other IPs boast, and Ubisoft hopes to change this with the Japanese Assassin’s Creed entry.
