Another Marvel Rivals-Level Hit?

Story Highlight
  • Marvel Rivals publisher NetEase has released a new multiplayer shooter dubbed FragPunk on Steam and EGS.
  • The entry brings an absurd take on the hero shooter genre with Shard Cards that make every round special.
  • The 5v5 tactical shooter currently has mixed reviews on Steam, but it might improve with future updates.

Marvel Rivals publisher launched Marvel Rivals last year, which dethroned Overwatch 2. Now, the company seems to be aiming for Valorant next with its new free title.

The publisher has now released a new free multiplayer shooter, FragPunk, on the Steam and Epic Games Store. This entry is a breath of fresh air in the hero shooter genre, as every round in the game is unique and full of unpredictable chaos.

Why it matters: Marvel Rivals publisher’s new FragPunk is the ideal amalgamation of rogue-lite elements finely blended with the traditional hero shooter genre.

FragPunk is one of the most absurd FPS ever to come out.

FragPunk is a mix of Valorant and CS2, with all the gaps being filled by innovative mechanics. The game introduces Shard Cards that bring various variables and allow you to break the rules of combat, adding rogue-lite elements in every round.

Shard Cards allow you to break the rules of combat and ensure that no two rounds are ever the same.

As clarified by NetEase, the game’s first season will last for 4 months and is divided into 2 chapters. Players can expect to see 13 Unique Lancers, over 150 Shard Cards, and over a dozen of ‘chaotic game modes.’

[The Shard Cards] can also combine and counter each other, adding an exciting tactical layer to the classic bomb-defuse experience.

Fans are suspecting FragPunk to become as popular as Marvel Rivals on Steam and EGS, but ‘mixed’ reviews suggest that the hero shooter has a long way to go. The title has been criticized for downgraded movements, microtransactions, and more.

For those not in the know, FragPunk was indefinitely delayed for consoles at the last minute, causing fans to be left disappointed. NetEase clarifies that it is slated to come ‘in the near future.’

Do you think NetEase’s new free hero shooter will be able to grow as much as Marvel Rivals, or are the mixed reviews a sign of a bad future on Steam? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
