- Shuhei Yoshida says that the PS6 launching in 2028 feels right to him.
- He said the previous console cycle was 7 years, but he thinks this year it should be more.
- The PS5 faced slow growth during its launch due to semiconductor shortages at that time.
PlayStation 5 has emerged as the undisputed king of home consoles this generation. While the sales are still going strong, fans have already started wondering when the next console will be released. Fortunately, we might have a subtle hint about it.
Former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive says that the PS6 releasing in 2028 would seem like the right move if Sony does go on with it.
Why it matters: The PS6 already sounds like a revolutionary console on paper and could feature AMD’s highly acclaimed X3D Cache technology which could be a big step up from the PS5.
Talking to VentureBeat, Shuhei Yoshida talked about the life cycle of consoles. The PS4 lasted for about 7 years which means PS6 could drop by 2027. However, Yoshida thinks that it would be a bit too early.
At its launch, the PS5 was scarcely available due to the semiconductor shortage caused by the pandemic. So, it initially faced very slow sales; therefore, a 2028 release date just ‘feels right’.
The PS5 generation was slowed down because of manufacturing issues. If the next PlayStation comes out in 2028, that feels right to me.
– Shuhei Yoshida
He also talked about how rumors also point to the next Xbox releasing in the same year. There are diminishing returns from semiconductors, so both launching in the same year could be the right move.
Nevertheless, Yoshida said he didn’t know what was planned internally, but this is what he thought would be the right time for the next-gen PlayStation. After spending over 30 years with the gaming giant, the former executive recently left Sony.
