The MSI Claw is a new gaming handheld scheduled to launch soon, starting from $699. However, it seems Chinese media sources have already had a chance to compare the ROG Ally and the MSI Claw side by side in terms of benchmarks.
The MSI Claw handheld is the first based on the Core Ultra architecture with Arc graphics. However, it appears that ASUS’s AMD Z1 Extreme handheld outperforms MSI’s upcoming Intel Core Ultra offering in terms of gaming thus far.
Because of MSI’s decision to use an Intel chip, fans had kept close eyes on this portable gaming device. However, initial results suggest this choice was not the wisest.
Several game benchmarks, such as the graphically demanding Cyberpunk 2077 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, were run on both devices by a Chinese website named Bilibili.
The MSI Claw tended to hover at 44.82 FPS, whereas the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme averaged 59.83 FPS. This is a significant difference since every bit of performance is important in handheld gaming.
When benchmarked at their maximum TDP, the ROG Ally takes a clear victory in terms of pure performance. The Asus ROG Ally also achieved more performance at lower wattages.
This was observed in benchmarks from Shadow of the Tomb Raider conducted at lower TDPs. Here, the Ally outperformed the Claw by 54% at 15W. These results are not the most impressive for MSI’s first gaming handheld.
It should be noted that the MSI Claw with the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H was used for this comparison. This is the more powerful of the two models and costs up to $750. Meanwhile, the other model is set to feature fewer processing cores.
Furthermore, the MSI Claw is still some ways out from release; its drivers might not be finished just yet. However, you might be better off reserving your money for a different Windows handheld if this early comparison is any indication.
If only one game had displayed the anomaly, we could have dismissed it as the game providing incorrect data. However, since both Cyberpunk 2077 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider exhibit this error, the most likely cause is hardware limitations.
