The marketing push for Mortal Kombat 1 has begun. NetherRealm Studios revealed the first gameplay trailer at Summer Game Fest, and the press has also been allowed to play the game for the first time.
This has allowed fans to learn new information about the game, including many details that might be divisive. According to multiple reports, Mortal Kombat 1 will not include a 1v1 fighting mode.
Why it matters: Mortal Kombat fans have been used to 1v1 fights for over a decade. Mortal Kombat 9 was the last game to feature a tag-team mode, but the mode was added as an extra option.

Following the recent media coverage, Mortal Kombat Youtuber, BruskPoet posted a tweet expressing disappointment at the lack of a 1v1 mode in Mortal Kombat 1. Another Twitter user corroborated this detail, claiming a Brazilian media channel pointed toward similar information.
Mortal Kombat 1 introduces Kameo characters. These characters serve as assists, providing opportunities to extend combos, break opponent pressure, and more. Previously, games like Dragon Ball FighterZ and Marvel vs Capcom have implemented similar assists.
These Kameo characters allow the game to separate itself from previous Mortal Kombat titles while allowing NetherRealm Studios to bring back classic characters that may not make it to the base roster.
However, Mortal Kombat has traditionally been limited to 1v1 fighting. New fans of the franchise have also been used to this style of gameplay over the last three games, so many had hoped NetherRealm would include a separate mode without Kameo characters.
This information suggests that Kameo characters are integrated into the core gameplay, making it difficult to separate them from combat.
While the lack of a 1v1 mode may be disappointing, NetherRealm Studios is known to listen to fan feedback and implement changes. With enough demand, the developer could add an extra mode for fans looking to play the game without the Kameo characters.
Mortal Kombat 1 releases on September 19, with more information about the roster and gameplay mechanics to be revealed in the coming months.
