Old Rivals Are Now Allies!

Summer Game Fest has finally kicked off with loads of new reveals and gameplay trailers. The gaming showcase also gave fans the first look at the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay.

The event also included a developer interview with creator Ed Boon.

Why It Matters: Mortal Kombat’s last release happened in 2019, and fans have been patiently waiting for the next entry and how it will improve upon its predecessor. The first reveal of the game looks promising.

Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, was brought on stage to discuss the Mortal Kombat 1 mechanics and gameplay details.

Mortal Kombat 1 will feature Kameo fighters, a second roster of characters to help you assist throughout the battle. Players can choose different Kameo Fighters to assist the main character in different combos that make battles even more diverse.

Kameo fighters can be summoned between the battle at any time using a single button for special moves and between combos. The gameplay also shows tag team cinematics and fatalities.

Classic Mortal Kombat characters like Sonya, Kano, and Jax were featured in the trailer as Kameo fighters in their older costumes. According to Ed Boon, these Kameo fighters pay homage to characters from the previous Mortal Kombat games.

It is worth noting that Mortal Kombat 1 is set in a different timeline than the previous Mortal Kombat games, as depicted in the ending of Mortal Kombat 11. Old rivals will also be allies in this game.

Mortal Kombat 1 will feature a roster of iconic characters, including Raiden, Liu Kang, Kitana, Johnny Cage, and more. Additionally, leaks have suggested that DLC characters such as Homelander and Quan Chi will appear in the title.

Ed Boon has promised to share additional gameplay details on Mortal Kombat 1 throughout the summer, including character reveals and more gameplay footage. The game is set to release on September 19, 2023, and it requires a whopping 100GB of storage and 8GB of VRAM, as recommended by the system requirements.
