Big Acquisition For Sega!

Yesterday, it was reported that Sega was looking to acquire Rovio, the developer behind Angry Birds, the popular mobile-gaming franchise. The franchise has spawned various gaming entries since its inception in 2009, along with two movie adaptations.

The report stated that Sega was looking to buy the developer for a whopping $1 billion, but the company did not confirm or deny anything at that point. A day after the reports spread like wildfire, Sega officially confirmed the acquisition.

The Japanese gaming giant will now acquire Rovio for nearly $776 million.

This may be an attempt from Sega to break into the mobile-gaming segment through Rovio’s previous experience and skill in the genre.

As stated earlier, Angry Birds was among the first mobile games to take the world by storm. While the franchise has not remained relevant today, Rovio could lead to a new revolution for Sega in this gaming market segment.

The Angry Birds franchise has previously made its way to console platforms like the PS3, Xbox 360, and more. Sega also confirmed that the company would support Rovio in endeavors beyond the mobile gaming market.

With this acquisition, Rovio could utilize Sega’s support to take a shot and console and PC gaming.

Sega believes the deal will be completed by the second quarter of FY2024. This should mean that Rovio will be a part of Sega before the end of 2023.
