The Era of Exclusives is Coming To An End in 2025!

Story Highlight
  • Jason Schreier predicts Microsoft and Sony are shifting away from console-exclusive games to release titles on multiple platforms.
  • High game production costs and slow console market growth make exclusives financially unsustainable for many companies.
  • However, Nintendo’s future strategy regarding exclusives is less certain.

Big changes are happening in the gaming world as companies like Microsoft and Sony move away from exclusive games and focus on releasing titles across different platforms. The goal is to reach more players and tackle the growing costs of game development.

Industry insider Jason Schreier predicts that Xbox will fully adopt this multi-platform approach this year, with PlayStation soon to follow. The only possible exception could be Nintendo, as it’s unclear if they will continue with exclusives.

Why it matters: Earlier this week, a reputable analyst predicted that Xbox’s future would look bright thanks to its multiplatform strategy. Jason’s insight indicates that Microsoft will now fully commit to the strategy.

Xbox and PlayStation Multiplatform 2025
Jason Schreier anticipates Xbox will fully embrace this multi-platform strategy this year, with PlayStation likely following suit.

In his article on Bloomberg, Jason Schreier argued that exclusive titles are becoming less relevant due to the rising costs of game development.

Games cost too much to make, the console audience isn’t growing fast enough, and skipping Steam means missing out on a massive chunk of the market. This year, I think we’ll see Xbox go completely multi-platform and PlayStation get closer and closer.

A few key reasons drive the shift to multiplatform availability. Developing high-quality games is getting more expensive, and sticking to just one console limits potential earnings.

By launching games on multiple platforms, companies can reach more players and boost profits. Sony has already started releasing games on PC that were once exclusive to PlayStation.

On the other hand, Xbox seems fully committed to its multiplatform strategy. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be the first Xbox title to be released on PlayStation later this year. Another insider revealed that more Xbox-exclusive titles will be released on rival consoles.

Xbox Series X Vs PlayStation 5
This multiplatform strategy should benefit gamers by giving them access to more games, no matter which platform they use.

Moreover, Jason suggests Nintendo will still focus on exclusive games, but it’s unclear how long this strategy will work. The success of cross-platform games might lead Nintendo to rethink its approach later on.
