Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake Needs A PC For 60FPS Gameplay

Consoles Will Receive Unlocked Frame Rate But Not 60FPS!

Story Highlights
  • Konami has revealed that Metal Gear Solid 3 won’t come with a dedicated 60FPS mode on consoles.
  • Instead, it will feature a 4K 30FPS mode along with a separate option that offers an unlocked frame rate at 1080p.
  • The publisher’s statement implies that this mode will not consistently reach 60FPS, making PC the only viable platform for this target.

Konami seems to have confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake will skip the dedicated 60FPS mode. However, while upcoming releases like Avowed will still be locked at 30FPS, that won’t be the case with Konami’s remake.

Why it matters: 60FPS has become a standard for most gamers. The smoother refresh rate provides a much more responsive gaming experience, something every game should have in 2024.

Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake
Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake will offer two graphical modes.

Despite not explicitly having a 60FPS dedicated mode, Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake will feature two modes: a fidelity and a performance mode. The fidelity mode will run at 4K 30FPS, likely using upscaling.

The fidelity mode is more interesting as it offers a 1080p and higher frame rate experience. Konami hasn’t said much about this mode, but it seems to come with unlocked frame rates.

Since the publisher has explicitly avoided the 60FPS term, consoles are unlikely to hit this target. The remake will use Unreal Engine 5 and is expected to struggle with performance like most games on this engine, especially those using Nanite and Lumen.

For context, Hellblade 2 also lacks a 60FPS mode on consoles. Anyhow, this would mean that PC will be the only platform with proper 60FPS gameplay for Konami’s remake.

Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake
The remake is very faithful to the original game.

This also raises the question of whether more future games won’t feature 60FPS options. This could be a trend moving forward, and companies might allow a smoother refresh rate only on the upper-tier consoles from now, like the upcoming PS5 Pro.

Still, despite not having the dedicated 60FPS, it is good to find out that Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake at least allows an unlocked frame rate. Konami also recently invited a limited audience to experience the game, indicating a very faithful rendition of the classic.
