Why Days Gone’s Survival Elements Make It More Exciting

One of the best survival games.

Story Highlights
  • Days Gone is one of the best survival games due to the depth of its survival elements.
  • You have to be careful of the variety of enemies in the open world, which get more dangerous at night.
  • It would help if you also looked after your bike and inventory to survive.

Survival games keep players hooked due to the critical thinking required in the genre. To survive, you must always look for your resources and find new ways to tackle challenging situations.

Things become more interesting if these survival scenarios are applied in an open-world environment, where you must be aware of your surroundings, especially when traveling across the map from one point to another, like in Days Gone.

Rich Open-World

Days Gone is a game with an open-world environment full of survival scenarios. Fans savor it for what it is, and it is one of the most acclaimed zombie games. However, for several reasons, many also view it as a negative entry in the survival and zombie genre. Despite the mixed reviews, it has left a mark.

Days Gone’s open-world environment is what a zombie apocalypse should look like. Different kinds of zombies wander across the map looking for flesh and blood, and they get even more dangerous at night. In addition to the zombies, there are enemy traps and camps set by human enemies.

Whenever you leave your resting place, you are most likely to encounter at least one of these two types of predators. To make things more interesting, the game makes you a responsible person and takes care of several things to survive.

Looking After Your Bike Is Essential

To travel across the map, Deacon(the protagonist) uses a bike that needs to be refilled as its gas tank runs out of fuel.

At the start of the game, fuel can be hard to find. Almost every gas station is swarmed up with zombies, and they have set up their nests there. The only way to find fuel is if you stumble upon a fuel can lying around somewhere, or you can also refill it at an allied camp or your safe point.

The gas stations swarmed up with zombies can be cleared, and when it is, you can use that gas station to refill the fuel tank. However, with limited supplies and no upgrades at the start of the game, it’s hard to clear the hordes of zombies.

You may have to use other ways to get fuel. Moreover, the fuel tank has a limited capacity initially, so you can’t go long distances without refilling.

Apart from the fuel, the bike’s health must also be cared for. Whenever your bike is involved in an accident, it loses health. If the health reaches zero, your bike won’t start. To be sure that never happens, you always need to carry scrap that can be used to fix the bike.

Like the fuel can, scraps can also be found randomly at a camp or under the hood of a broken car. If you don’t have enough scraps to fix your bike, you can also go to a nearby camp, and the camp’s mechanic can fetch and fix the bike for a small price.

Although I don’t enjoy forced traveling in open-world games, I must admit that these details make the traveling so thrilling.

Keep An Eye Out For Your Inventory

The supplies are also essential for your survival. It would help if you carried rags and sterilizers to prepare bandages to heal your health. Similarly, weapons like pipe bombs and Molotovs can also be created using items like kerosene, rags, bear bottles, scraps, gunpowder, and boxes of nails.

You can also upgrade your melee weapon using such supplies to deal extra damage, like turning a regular baseball bat can be turned into a spiked one using a box of nails.

You also need to preplan your use of supplies and prioritize the things you want to craft because many crafting recipes require the same item.

Gun ammo must also be spent carefully, as you may only find ammo from enemy(human) weapons after taking them out or at a camp, which will cost you money. But as you earn money doing missions, you can upgrade your guns and ammo capacity to deal extra damage.

The best thing about Days Gone’s survival element is that you need almost every item to survive in the open world. There are enemies and zombie swarms that don’t go down quickly, so you will need to devise different strategies to take them down, which every item in your inventory is essential.
