UK Government To Investigate Rockstar’s Alleged Union Busting

Expert Verified By

Prime Minister Calls It A "Deeply Concerning" Case.

Story Highlight
  • A UK MP brought up Rockstar’s alleged union busting in a recent Parliament session with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
  • PM Keir Starmer described it as a deeply concerning case and wants it thoroughly investigated.
  • Keir argues that every company must comply with UK employment law and that all workers have the right to join a union.

Besides catching negative press over rampant GTA 6 delays, Rockstar has also been under fire for laying off over 30 developers over ‘gross misconduct.’ However, IWGB (Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain) claims the publisher attempted to engage in union-busting instead.

Now, even UK MP Chris Murray believes what Rockstar did falls under union-busting, which is illegal under UK employment law. Rockstar failed to reassure Chris that it was complying with employment law during a meeting, prompting a response from Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Why it matters: Like many, UK MP Chris Murray also believes that Rockstar’s recent firing of over 30 employees is union-busting. The government investigating the company could finally bring a concrete conclusion to this dilemma.

UK MP Chris Murray Rockstar Case
UK MP Chris Murray brought up Rockstar’s recent firings in Wednesday’s Parliament session.

As Chris shared on Twitter, he raised this issue with Prime Minister Keir Starmer during Wednesday’s parliament session. The PM agrees this is ‘a deeply concerning case,’ arguing every UK company has to follow employment laws regardless of how much profit they make.

He also adds that every worker has the right to join a union, so it’s no justification for Rockstar to fire developers.

Every worker has the right to join a trade union and we’re determined to strengthen workers rights and ensure they don’t face unfair consequences for being part of a union.

Therefore, the PM assures Rockstar will be investigated by ministers to determine the actual objective reason behind the layoffs affecting over 30 developers.

GTA 6
Rockstar is currently hard at work on its magnum opus, GTA 6.

For those not in the know, industry sources revealed that Rockstar fired these developers over Discord messages discussing new company policies, not over GTA 6 leaks. The publisher claimed these employees were sharing and discussing confidential information.

Do you think the expected Rockstar investigation will affect the launch of GTA 6 in any way, or will these layoffs be swept under the rug? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
