An Employee Says A Non-US Company Will Buy Ubisoft!

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft halted trading a few days ago, sparking rumors that it would soon be acquired.
  • Now, a credible insider claims that a Ubisoft employee said the publisher will soon be acquired.
  • The buyer is said to be a non-US-based entity, and the rumor has been circulating for a while.

A few days ago, Ubisoft postponed its half-year earnings results and suspended trading in its shares in an unusual move. The delay suggests the publisher is preparing a major announcement about its future soon, which has sparked a bunch of rumors.

Some users were quick to suspect that Ubisoft is about to be bought by a major presence in the gaming industry, and this tidbit now seems more likely than ever. An industry insider claims that a Ubisoft employee has claimed that ‘someone’ will soon buy the publisher.

Why it matters: The Ubisoft buyout could shake the current balance in the gaming scene. It may have many positive and negative consequences, such as financial stability paired with a loss of creativity.

The insider says an employee revealed that Ubisoft could be acquired soon.

As per a tweet by Detective Seeds, the trade was halted due to “a serious M&A discussion to close on assets.” The unnamed employee also adds that a non-US-based party is serious about buying Ubisoft, and the buyer has already been rumored in the industry for a while.

Someone is serious about buying Ubisoft. I was not told who the buyer was other than “not a US based entity and it has been rumored for a while.”

So, there’s a large possibility that either Tencent or Sony is looking to secure Ubisoft under its umbrella. However, the former is more likely due to past rumors about Tencent teaming up with the Guillemot Family to acquire Ubisoft.

Ubisoft ultimately partnered with Tencent to form a new gaming subsidiary instead, granting the Chinese giant a 25% stake. It’s now possible that Tencent is in talks to acquire Ubisoft entirely soon.

Regardless, Ubisoft plans to launch 10 games in the next 2 years.

Regardless, Ubisoft has not officially confirmed or denied the acquisition and instead said that trading was halted to prevent unnecessary speculation during the delay. Therefore, it’s best to take it with a grain of salt.

Do you think Ubisoft will actually be acquired this time around, or will these rumors go nowhere? Are you in favor of this acquisition? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
