An Extraction Shooter Has Also Been In Development For Some Time.

Story Highlight
  • Far Cry will push predominantly multiplayer mechanics from the next game onwards.
  • Tencent wants more people to play the game for longer.
  • An extraction shooter based on the franchise has also been in the works for a long time.

Far Cry is without a doubt one of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, with every entry of the FPS series attracting millions around the globe. The IP is even getting a TV show now, in addition to a much-anticipated sequel to Far Cry 6, which has been the topic of speculation for a while now.

Ubisoft teased that the upcoming entry will be different from anything we have seen before, and if leaks are true, Far Cry is about to change forever.

Why This Matters: Ubisoft risks alienating a large part of the Far Cry player base if it continues in this direction and makes the game multiplayer-focused.

Far Cry 7
Far Cry 7 is now expected to change many things in the franchise.

According to insider Stephen Totilo’s new report, Far Cry is set to get a massive directional overhaul with the next entry, as the series will be shifting its focus to multiplayer.

Tencent is managing the series now as per the agreement it made with Ubisoft this year. And, as per the report, the company wants to push for multiplayer mechanics in Far Cry 7 so it can attract more players who will play for a longer period of time.

For a series that has always been big on linear single-player FPS campaigns, this is a major tilt for the next entry. Previous leaks regarding Far Cry 7 have also teased a monumental shift in mechanics in addition to the leaked setting of New England.

Far Cry 6
Far Cry has built itself on single-player experiences.

Furthermore, an extraction shooter based on the franchise has also been in the works alongside Far Cry 7, so this broader shift is not out of the blue. However, fans didn’t have a positive reaction to this news, with many on the gaming subreddit saying goodbye to the series and blaming Ubisoft for ruining things again.

With rumors also stating that Far Cry 7 could have a third-person perspective, fans won’t be wrong to say that the franchise is unrecognizable, a mere shell of its older self.
