Would've Featured A Former Slave In His Fight Against A White Supremacist Group!

Story Highlight
  • Reports reveal that Ubisoft canceled a new Assassin’s Creed game for being too controversial.
  • The game would’ve featured a black protagonist who was a former slave.
  • The protagonist would fight against injustice and the emergence of a white supremacist group.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has taken players across various regions and time periods, including ancient Greece, Egypt, feudal Japan, and more. However, fans believe that the Kenway saga was the best that the series had to offer, taking players across America, the Caribbean, and France.

According to a new report, we almost got a continuation of the Civil War era with a new Assassin’s Creed game set after the war’s events. However, unfortunately, the game was cancelled as company leadership deemed it ‘too controversial.’

Why it matters: Following the reception of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Ubisoft has been on thin ice due to facing controversy over misrepresentation and other factors. As such, it’d make sense for them to cancel a project that would be too controversial.

According to the Game File, several sources at Ubisoft have revealed the plot behind the game. Set in the 1860s and 70s, the title would feature a black colored protagonist who was a former slave from the South, and he’d move west to start a new life.

After being recruited by the Brotherhood, he’d return to the South to fight against injustice and the Ku Klux Klan, a notable white supremacist group that emerged during the same time period.

Ubisoft Won’t Showcase Any New Games Until Next Year

It’d make sense why Ubisoft would cancel this title, given this scoop already hinting at a lot of hate speech and controversy to come. Furthermore, Yasuke, the black protagonist from Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, wasn’t received well by the gaming community either.

One source summarized the entire reason behind the game’s cancellation, stating:

Too political in a country too unstable, to make it short

The project was still in its early stages of development, though. Nonetheless, there are still numerous entries to be released in the franchise soon. A new free DLC for Assassin’s Creed Mirage is coming soon, followed by a Black Flag Remake next year.
