- Sony has published a new patent to capture live player reactions to give real-time gameplay recommendations.
- The system also wants to actively change gameplay elements, such as difficulty, to ensure players have the best experience.
- The patent wants to ensure that the game can cater to every user and keep user engagement high.
Sony is arguably the leading gaming conglomerate, focused on advancing innovations in accessibility and player experience in games. The company’s wildest and unique ideas first appear in the form of patents in an attempt to secure them from rivals. But the recently published piece might just steal the spotlight.
We’ve found a new patent that records player reactions during gameplay to control the player experience. The proposed system will provide dynamic suggestions during gameplay to ensure players have an easier time; it also wants to alter gameplay in real time depending on how a user reacts while playing a game.
A system and method is provided to enable capturing of player reactions during game play, and using those reactions to characterize actions taking place in video game play. The reactions, in some embodiments, are captured using multiple sensors.
Why it matters: Sony’s patent to record player reactions to giving real-time suggestions and changing gameplay is seen as both a boon and a bane among gamers. It might also jeopardize gamers’ privacy if used for nefarious purposes.
The patent, ‘HUMAN PERFORMANCE CAPTURING FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RECOMMENDATIONS,’ also discusses changing gameplay difficulty after seeing users’ responses in real-time—something we’ve seen pop up in a few patents already.
Sony argues that current systems cannot cater to every player, reducing the overall user engagement to keep them interested in a game. So, a method that can provide assistance and suggestions during gameplay in real-time becomes necessary to keep players engaged.
The dynamic real-time recommendations can enhance the gameplay experience of the user by suggesting a new level to play, [… or] by adjusting the game code to make it easier or more difficult to progress in the game.
Sony will likely track players’ live reactions using the captured videos and audio to make real-time suggestions during gameplay. However, it is best to take these features with a grain of salt, as the company might never implement them.
It’s worth noting that Sony has also secured many other notable patents over the years, such as one to use AI accounts to impersonate gamers to catch malicious players in games and another to secure an advanced system to automatically adjust game FPS, brightness, and other details based on real-life factors.
Do you think Sony should record players’ reactions under the guise of guiding them and dynamically changing game difficulty on the go? Let us know your opinions in the comments below, or join the discussion on the official Tech4Gamers forum.
