- Sony aims to become a creative leader in the single-player experience.
- This comes after a long and tough defeat in the push for live-service games.
- The upcoming slate for single-players is quite strong, and the latter part of PS5’s cycle looks optimistic.
The current PS5 generation has been the most underwhelming in terms of first-party games. Despite being known for its cinematic single-player games, Sony barely has anything to offer to PS5 users in the latter part of the console’s run.
The reason behind this was their push for the live-service trend. Sony failed terribly in that pursuit and has admitted as much. Now, the gaming giant has stated that it wants to become a creative leader in the single-player experience, suggesting a retreat back from the live-service push.
Why it matters: Sony tried riding the live-service bandwagon long after it had passed. In doing so, they abandoned the single-player experience for which they were highly regarded. Fortunately, this lesson has taught Team Blue to stick to its lane.
Sony recently published its Corporate Report of 2025, where it discussed its strategy for the future. Listed as a strategic key point, they want to further innovate in the single-player department.
Advancing position as creative leaders in single-player experiences.
Still, this doesn’t mean they’re pulling back from the live-service push completely. In the same section, they stated:
Broadening business model and studio capabilities through diversification of live service offerings.
Sony’s upcoming slate of live-service releases involves Bungie’s Marathon and Haven Games’ FairGame$. Both of these games have gone through some development hurdles. However, they are still under active development and are the only projects alive after Sony gutted the majority of the live-service games it was working on.
In terms of single-player releases, the future is reassuring for fans. Ghost of Yotei is releasing next month, followed by Marvel’s Wolverine and a Venom spin-off game next year. Further down the line, Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic is also expected in a couple of years.
Other than that, the gaming giant has a few unannounced projects, including the God of War Metroidvania game and others, which are expected to be unveiled at a PlayStation event that is potentially taking place this month.
