Sony Reportedly Ready To Acquire Warner Bros Studios

Sony Will Acquire IPs Like Batman And Harry Potter In This Purchase.

Story Highlight
  • Sony could be acquiring the streaming and gaming assets of Warner Bros Discovery.
  • The American giant is splitting its cable and IP assets into two in the middle of 2026.
  • As for now, this is only a rumor and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Despite the failure of their live-service projects and lack of first-party exclusives this generation, Sony and PlayStation are still raking in record revenue and making more money than any previous PlayStation generation.

big part of Sony’s approach has been diversifying its portfolio by producing movies and TV shows based on PlayStation IPs, resulting in increased exposure. And, if rumors are true, the company is set to expand its multimedia empire by acquiring one of the world’s largest companies, Warner Bros.

Why it matters: Sony already has a massive lead in the console war; this would effectively give the company a near-monopoly.

Warner Bros Sony Loss In 2024
Warner Bros hasn’t had the best luck in the gaming industry as of late.

According to a leaker known as SEScoops, Sony is internally considering acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming and other assets. The Japanese giant is only interested in purchasing the newly announced subsidiary of WB, which will separate from the global Warner Bros. network in mid-2026, as recently revealed.

Unsurprisingly, Sony wants to acquire the gaming assets owned by the American company in addition to HBO Max and the IPs associated with WB. This will result in franchises like Batman, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter reverting to Sony and PlayStation with complete control over making future video games.

Sony already owns several big-name IPs like Spider-Man, God of War, Uncharted, and Ghostbusters, so adding the library of Warner Bros will make the Japanese company a force to be reckoned with worldwide.

Sony already has multiple big-name IPs under its belt.

Of course, you should take this rumor with a grain of salt, as the leaker mostly shares news about AEW, another promotion owned by WB. And, even if this is true, Microsoft had to face considerable scrutiny during its acquisition of Activision, so one can only imagine what Sony will go through in a potential merger or acquisition of Warner Bros.
