Hollow Knight: Silksong Turns Late Fan Who Battled Cancer into a Boss Tribute

Seth Will Live On Forever In Silksong!

Story Highlight
  • Hollow Knight Silksong features an NPC called ‘Seth.’
  • Seth was created by a fan battling cancer, with the wish to create a character for Silksong.
  • Unfortunately, Seth passed away in 2019, but he will live on forever in Silksong.

The reason why Indie games are so successful in the first place is because they’re passion projects from the fans to the fans. As such, the developers involved in the project are usually well-connected with their fandom.

Hollow Knight isn’t an exception either, as Team Cherry has been known to acknowledge and take care of the fandom. The prime example of this scenario is that Silksong pays tribute to a late fan, who is now featured in the game as an NPC who has a boss fight.

Why it matters: It’s always a nice gesture to see developers acknowledge their fans and the love for their craft.

In 2019, one Redditor who was battling against a type of cancer known as Ewing sarcoma posted that he talked to Team Cherry, who said that he could make a character for Silksong. Back then, details surrounding the character were kept under wraps aside from the name, which is ‘Seth’, named after the fan himself.

Unfortunately, Seth couldn’t see the release of Silksong as he passed away in 2019 in his fight against cancer. Now, 6 years later, after Silksong has been released, Seth continues to live on in the game and has one of the most beautiful boss fights in the game described by fans.

Seth is a Shrine Guardian protecting the Pollen Heart, which is one of the three hearts that players would need to advance further into Act 3. After defeating him, players can stumble across Seth again in places like Greymoor and Grand Gate. Players can be awarded a memento after they beat Seth with the highest score in Flea Games.

Seth is also listed in the game’s credits with Team Cherry, once again acknowledging and paying their respects to one of the most dedicated fans of the game.
