- Ubisoft, once responsible for many gems, is just a shell of its past self today.
- However, the developer has now shown interest in reviving its creative titles, including Rayman.
- A new Rayman game that upholds the series legacy can help Ubisoft improve its image.
It’s important to never forget that success and renown are fleeting things. Something or someone at the peak of popularity will come crumbling down to the ground if they’re not careful enough. It pains me to see the same happening to Ubisoft these days.
With monotonous open-world design, openly antagonizing players with hurtful statements like “live with not owning your games,” and then the controversial Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft has given its followers plenty of reasons to hate it. But, I still believe in second chances. Who knows, the days when it created Rayman Legends might return.
Why it matters: The Ubisoft of today is rife with flaws, but it can take a step towards redemption if it gives the Rayman revival the dedication and care it deserves.
Ubisoft of The Past: Greatness
You must have seen me criticize Ubisoft’s actions a lot lately. But you know what, as much as I bash it today, I was once its number one fan. I’ve played almost every Ubisoft game of the past, and I say this with great pride. The Ubisoft logo brought me joy back then, but unfortunately, it doesn’t anymore.
I still remember vividly what it was like in the developer’s peak times. The Ezio trilogy of the Assassin’s Creed series, Far Cry 1-3, Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, the original Watch Dogs, and above all, Rayman.
Every subsequent Ubisoft game was one banger after another. They were free of monotony, greed, political correctness, specific agendas; everything wrong with today’s games. The past Assassin’s Creed games set an insurmountable standard, Prince of Persia inspired many action-platformer games, and Splinter Cell was a stealth marvel.
Peak Ubisoft in 2003-04. All these games were published by Ubisoft within one year of each other.

Rayman Might Return And I’m Overjoyed
I want to see this Ubisoft return. But what do I get? Ubisoft abandons The Lost Crown, one good game it delivered in years. Words can’t express how hateful I felt when I saw this news. I was dangerously close to being done with Ubisoft, but one ray of hope compelled me to give it another chance.
Recently, Ubisoft has displayed keen interest in revisiting its timeless classic, Rayman. Ubisoft expressed how it wishes to double down on its established and creative IPs, especially Rayman. As ironic as this statement issued right after killing a creative game is, it’s better than nothing.
Rayman is, without a doubt, Ubisoft’s most imaginative and entertaining work to date for me. This iconic limbless, goofy hero first appeared in 1995 and ever since has been one hell of a platformer. The last entry, Rayman Legends, is the pinnacle of 2D platforming, with unreal-level design and a wealth of engaging content.
I can’t praise this game enough, it embodies fun and creativity, a reminder of what true gaming is all about, and a stark contrast to what Ubisoft is doing today. Seeing this series re-appear is my lifelong dream, one I’m possibly getting closer to. Just one problem though. I fall into deep despair when the realization of “modern” Ubisoft in control hits home.
Will Ubisoft’s Redemption Come To Pass?
Ultimately, I’m reminded of the cruel reality that the Ubisoft responsible for the legendary Rayman is long gone. As such, do I really want the current Ubisoft to handle the project? Well, my desperation and the existence of Prince of Persia The Lost Crown convinced me to give it a chance.
However, this is also a critical point for Ubisoft itself. The tech giant needs a hit as much as I want a good Rayman game, perhaps even more. Saying Ubisoft’s image has seen better days would be an understatement. The developer can’t go for long without a redemption arc, and this is the perfect opportunity.

Before beginning, Ubisoft needs to realize just what the Rayman series embodies. It needs to avoid adding anything unnecessary or “modern” to it. An authentic Rayman revival, one that truly feels like a continuation of the series’ legacy and not a half-baked nostalgia bait is the need of the hour.
The last thing I want is for Rayman to be ruined. I’ll take years of dormancy over a soulless product any day. However, if Ubisoft is sincere about this and manages to deliver a true Rayman experience once again, trust me I’ll be the first in line to praise it.
