Sony Aims To Make A God Of War Universe Akin To The MCU But Smaller In Scale!

Story Highlight
  • Job listing reveals that the next God of War game is a subfranchise releasing next year.
  • The game will be an action RPG directed by Cory Barlog, most likely set in Egypt as per previous leaks.
  • A new mainline God of War game is also in development, with Kratos expected to go back to the Greek world.

God of War fans have plenty to look forward to, as a spin-off Metroidvania prequel game was already shadowdropped last week, and beyond that, Santa Monica Studios is developing a remake of the first 3 games.

That won’t be all, as insiders suggest that a new God of War subfranchise is being introduced next year as an action RPG title.

Why it matters: The God of War franchise is rich with lore and many stories to explore. Therefore, it would be lovely to see Santa Monica Studios explore and capitalize on that element.

Details On Santa Monica Studios’ Next Game || ResetEra

According to the LinkedIn of one former senior writer at Santa Monica, they were working on a new franchise within the God of War universe. Even though their profile is no longer discoverable, a screenshot was captured and shared on ResetEra.

“Helped shape narrative vision and creative direction at Sony Santa Monica Studio for a new franchise within the God of War universe,”

This aligns well with previous claims from journalists like Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who stated that the next Santa Monica Studio title is being led by Cory Barlog (long-term God of War developer) and will be “not a new IP but it might feel like one.

Further adding to these reports, another insider, Ashhong, who has a strong track record for God of War leaks, stated that this next title will be an action RPG. Therefore, it is speculated to be similar to the newer Norse God of War games.

All signs point to a 2027 release for this spin-off game, which could very well be set in the long-rumored Egyptian region. A reveal is planned for the summer season of video game showcases, so we hope to learn more about the game soon, whether it will feature Kratos, Atreus, or an entirely new protagonist

As for Kratos’ next journey, the next mainline God of War game is set to revisit Greece and will release during the PlayStation 6 lifecycle.
