Marvel Rivals Publisher Nailed It Yet Again?

Story Highlight
  • Marvel Rivals publisher NetEase launched a new hero shooter, FragPunk, which has shaken the genre.
  • The entry hit over 113k daily active players during its first week, with current players around 50k.
  • The game innovates on the traditional hero shooter mechanics to craft an absurd yet exhilarating experience.

NetEase has been making the rounds for its popular hero shooter, Marvel Rivals, which launched last year. However, now the publisher has whipped up another entry in the genre that combines traditional gameplay with rogue-lite mechanics to make every round unique.

FragPunk has now hit over 113K daily active players during its launch week. Most of these players flooded the game servers in droves during the weekend.

Why it matters: FragPunk’s release has yet again proven that the hero shooter genre is far from being saturated, as enough innovation and fun can earn you a lot of players and milestones.

Marvel Rivals publisher's new hero shooter has had quite a strong player base after release.
Marvel Rivals publisher’s new hero shooter has had quite a strong player base after release.

As seen on SteamDB, Fragpunk had a promising start, with an over 50k player base on the first day. The numbers steadily climbed until the weekend, when the concurrent player count hit nearly 114k.

The player base is expected to grow as the entry gains more popularity through word of mouth. Therefore, the free-to-play shooter might compete against Marvel Rivals in the future, which casually hits over 200k daily player peaks

FragPunk combines the best of Valorant, CS2, and Fortnite, introducing Shard Cards that change the dynamics of every round. However, the game’s rating is currently ‘mostly positive’ because of microtransactions and some other points of concern.

FragPunk has been dubbed to be one of the most absurd FPS to have ever launched.

After a successful beta, FragPunk launched for Steam and Epic Games Store on March 6, 2025. The console release has been delayed indefinitely but is planned for soon.

Do you think NetEase’s exciting FragPunk will be able to retain a good average of players in the coming weeks, or is this strong start just a fluke? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
