Far Cry 3 Is Finally Getting a Long-Awaited 60 FPS Update on Current-Gen Consoles

Update Drops On 21st January, 2026!

Story Highlight
  • Ubisoft announces a Far Cry 3 60FPS update dropping on January 21st.
  • The update applies specifically to Far Cry 3 Classic Edition.
  • A similar treatment is expected for Far Cry Blood Dragon and Far Cry Primal.

Far Cry 3 is considered the pinnacle of the series by many, but, unfortunately, being 2 generations old at this point, modern consoles are locked to a capped 30FPS.

Fortunately, Ubisoft has now announced a 60FPS update for Far Cry 3 out of the blue, dropping for current-gen consoles next week, on 21st January, free of cost.

Why it matters: Current-gen consoles are certainly capable of outputting so much more than 30 FPS for this 13-year-old release. This new 60FPS update will draw new players to one of the best-open world shooters of all time.

Announced through the official Far Cry account, this new 60FPS update is applied exclusively to Far Cry 3 Classic Edition, which was released in 2018.

Overall, Far Cry 3 Classic Edition offers a few visual enhancements beyond higher resolution and is a single-player story mode package only, with co-op and multiplayer removed.

Unfortunately, the game has been capped at 30 FPS, at least on PlayStation consoles, since the Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles support 60 FPS via the backwards compatibility program. However, this update will enable native 60FPS across all current-gen consoles.

Ubisoft has recently been updating quite a few older games to 60FPS, including Assassin’s Creed Syndicate (2015) and Far Cry 5 (2018). Now, they’ve already teased similar treatment for Far Cry Blood Dragon and Far Cry Primal.

This move by the French publisher may be to create buzz around the IP, since 2 new Far Cry games are in development: one is a traditional single-player game, while the other is a multiplayer extraction shooter.

We expect to see reveals for both of these new titles sometime this year at a Ubisoft Forward event, where the publisher will also have other major announcements.
