Devs Are Cutting Down DEI Storylines!

Story Highlight
  • Baldur’s Gate 3’s Voice Actor claims that devs are cutting storylines involving DEI from their video games.
  • They added that a game as diverse as Baldur’s Gate 3 would struggle to get greenlit today.
  • However, they’re optimistic that DEI will not be eliminated from the industry and that indie titles will continue to implement it.

With the rise of companies like Sweet Baby Inc., the video game industry has faced severe backlash for its forced DEI initiatives in recent years. These practices didn’t last long, as severe public backlash forced devs to abandon them.

The voice actor for Baldur’s Gate 3 has also discussed DEI in video games and claimed that devs are now censoring their work that involves diversity.

Why it matters: Diversity in video games is completely fine, unless it’s enforced upon. Doing so ruins the storyline and the entire flow and structure of a game.

Samantha Béart, the voice actor for Karlach, was recently interviewed by TheGamer. They discussed how diversity storylines are being cut from games.

Without exposing devs, I know that’s happening. Their storylines have been cut, – Historically, appeasement is a really bad thing

They also added that a game as diverse as Baldur’s Gate 3 would struggle to get greenlit in today’s environment. Still, diversity in video games won’t disappear entirely, according to them, as indie devs are unlikely to follow suit in cutting storylines.

Big publishers like Amazon have already started to ditch their DEI programs and are “winding down outdated programs and materials.”

The CI Games CEO also states that DEI has led to various studio closures, among other issues, and that the industry is now course-correcting following fans’ backlash.

The DEI controversies have also made devs and voice actors in the industry prone to hate and backlash from gamers. Naughty Dog has even started boot camp training their actors to prepare for the online backlash they’d receive for their roles.
