Sony's Decima Engine Once Again Showcasing Its Capabilities!

Story Highlight
  • Just days before its release, Death Stranding 2 physical copies have been leaked.
  • Players report that the game supports 120Hz mode on PS5 Pro with 60 FPS+ on a supported VRR display.
  • Death Stranding 2 is another powerful showcase of Sony’s Decima engine that brings strong visuals with little to no performance tradeoff.

Death Stranding 2 is just days away from release and marks the beginning of a streak from Kojima, as the acclaimed artist fears he’s on a crunch and his creativity might run out soon.

Now, it appears physical copies of the game have leaked ahead of launch. Early players report that it’s a technical marvel, with support for 120Hz on the PS5 Pro console.

Why it matters: Ever since its release, the PS5 Pro hasn’t really been able to showcase the power that Sony claims it provides. Death Stranding 2 will be one of the few single-player titles to utilize the console’s capabilities fully.

A redditor has acquired a physical copy of Death Stranding 2 from a physical retail store, which is uncommon since the stores stock the copies just a couple of days before launch.

The user shared a few screenshots of the game running on his console and has reported a quality and performance mode, thus far, with the absence of a balanced mode. Quality mode was previously reported to be limited to 30 FPS only.

The performance mode does feature a 60Hz mode and a 120Hz mode. The 120Hz enabled a variable framerate above 60FPS, but for that, a VRR-enabled device is needed.

Death Stranding 2 also seems to be using Sony’s PSSR upscaling, and there isn’t a huge resolution difference between the quality and performance modes. Overall, the performance mode boasts pretty good visuals and image quality.

Sony’s in-house Decima Engine once again shows its true capabilities and is a testament that more first-party developers need to utilise the engine. There isn’t a huge performance tradeoff for the visuals the engine can deliver.
