Borderlands 4: RTX 5080 Fails To Maintain 60FPS At 4K Max Settings Even With DLSS

Another Unreal Engine 5 Mess Incoming!

Story Highlight
  • Borderlands 4’s PC port might be flawed, as it struggles to maintain a stable 60FPS at 4K max settings even on an RTX 5080.
  • As usual, Unreal Engine 5 seems to be the culprit here.
  • The Switch 2 port is also a mess, barely outputting 30FPS and struggling with input delay.

After a hiatus of 6 years, the Borderlands series is finally set to return next month. Borderlands 4 previews are pretty positive, suggesting a solid release from Gearbox that will put a bit of a twist on the franchise that was starting to get a bit stale.

That said, all that glitters isn’t gold, and the game might still stumble, at least on the technical side. Early previews indicate that Borderlands 4 has difficulty maintaining 60FPS at 4K max settings, even with DLSS enabled on the RTX 5080.

Why it matters: Performance issues in video games have been occurring at an unusually high rate recently. Developers should take more time optimizing their games, or else it backfires on them significantly.

zWORMz Gaming had the opportunity to test out a few upcoming releases at the Nvidia Gamescom 2025 Event. The GeForce Now setup was equipped with an RTX 5080, and so far, Borderlands 4 was the only mediocre experience.

Without Frame Gen enabled and at 4k maxed out settings with DLSS super resolution enabled, the game ran around 58 to 60ish FPS. It is important to note that the tested gameplay footage occurred in a closed environment.

With action involved and in a busy area, expect an even lower framerate. The surprising part is that Borderlands games have never been that demanding, but the latest entry is giving GPUs like the RTX 5080 a run for its money.

Gearbox Expects 6 Million Sales At Launch For The Game

The culprit here is obviously the Unreal Engine 5, which has become quite notorious for its questionable performance. On the Switch 2, a similar case was noted with the handheld barely outputting 30FPS while running Borderlands 4.

With the full release less than a month away, the true performance picture will soon be clear. Gearbox has shown strong confidence in the game, even going as far as to claim it would still be worth $350. But with these technical concerns already surfacing, that bold statement could easily backfire.
