Every Industry Struggles From Negative Outside Intervention.

Story Highlight
  • Rebellion’s CEO Jason Kingsley thinks publishers only want games to appease shareholders, not players.
  • The Atomfall developer said every industry on the planet suffers from negative outside intervention.
  • Kingsley also stated that Rebellion is protected chiefly from such outside intervention.

The gaming industry has been experiencing a difficult period recently, with multiple big-budget AAA titles failing to make an impact and studios experiencing constant layoffs. Even after giving their blood, sweat, and tears to companies, developers get fired without a second thought, making job security almost non-existent.

Many have blamed the number-based approach to the business as the main reason for this, and now the developer of Atomfall has decided to call out this behaviour from publishers.

Why it matters: The profit-based gaming approach kills video games’ artistic merit.

Star Wars: Outlaws also failed to meet sales expectations.

While talking to PC Gamer, Jason Kingsley, the CEO of Atomfall developer Rebellion, said that the main goal of big companies is to manage shareholder perception first and make games second.

According to the CEO, games are made for publishers’ quarterly reports and not to provide gamers with a satisfactory experience.

some of these big companies their business is managing their shareholders’ perceptions and making games is a  secondary consequence.”

Kingsley further explained that people who want fast results negatively affect every entertainment industry and don’t care much about the paying audience. Gaming is the prime example of this as managers and shareholders have no expertise in development and request studios to put fewer bugs in the game.

In addition, the CEO revealed that the studio behind Atomfall, Rebellion, is free from most intervention as it does its own marketing, PR, and investment.

The Atomfall developer also didn’t put all the blame on shareholders and publishers, saying the industry expanded too quickly after Covid. When the correction arrived post-COVID-19, it hit everyone suddenly and led to mass layoffs across the industry.

Rebellion’s Atomfall launched to positive reviews, probably thanks to the lack of outside intervention in Rebellion.
