How Assassin’s Creed Infinity Can Pave The Way For A Game Set In Modern Era

Time To Do Something Brand New For Assassin's Creed!

Story Highlight
  • The Assassin’s Creed series has never shied from trying different things, whether in terms of setting or genre.
  • With the Infinity platform becoming a hub, the franchise can experiment with smaller releases, including one for a modern-day title.
  • Glimpses of such a game were seen in modern-day missions from Assassin’s Creed 3 and the Watch Dogs crossover.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise is famous for exploring various settings of the historical era. Whether it’s the Golden Age of Piracy, the French Revolution, or even ancient Greece and Egypt, the franchise has always been associated with various historical eras.

Assassin’s Creed has never shied away from exploring different eras, and it officially goes to Japan with this year’s release. However, one thing Ubisoft hasn’t done yet is make an entry that caters to the modern-day aspect.

With all future releases joining the Infinity platform, the studio has the perfect opportunity to change things up. In my opinion, Ubisoft should consider a new game based on the modern era.

Why it matters: The Assassin’s Creed franchise is bigger than ever, and the modern-day setting means a completely new approach for the series.

Exploring Different Genres

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is reportedly the last RPG from this studio, and future titles will take a different approach. Assassin’s Creed Hexe, rumored to be set during the witch trials, will offer a more linear experience, although not much is known about this entry.

Even multiplayer titles are planned for the series in the future. This shows how diverse Ubisoft wants to be with the IP, evolving with time to keep things fresh. In my opinion, creating an entry based on the modern setting could further this goal.

Modern sequences have always been important in the IP, with the Animus serving as a means to explore distant memories from the past. Since Assassin’s Creed Infinity will bridge all future games, the studio could experiment with smaller titles.

Imagine a short expansion-style release that offers 8-10 hours of modern-day gameplay. Not only would that be fresh for Assassin’s Creed, but it would also allow the developers to explore various interesting ideas.

The Potential of Modern-Day Assassin’s Creed

To say that Assassin’s Creed has never tried to explore the modern era might be a stretch. Players have experienced the modern-day Assassin-Templar feud in two instances: Assassin’s Creed 3 and Watch Dogs: Legion.

In Assassin’s Creed 3, there are several modern-day sequences where Desmond has to take field missions as he becomes an assassin and utilizes the experience from Animus memories. These missions were more linear but offered a distinct experience.

Watch Dogs Legion expanded on this concept with an update that marked the first crossover between Assassin’s Creed after years of hints. Watch Dogs Legion followed the same sequences as older Assassin’s Creed games, such as stealth and combat, but with a modern twist.

Surprisingly, it felt a lot like Assassin’s Creed despite being a different game altogether. These events weren’t canon, but they showed that Ubisoft’s core gameplay could work in a modern setting.

Reports suggest that Watch Dogs is dead and buried as a franchise now and has no chance of being revived. However, since these IPs have both crossed over, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they were merged together.

Ubisoft could present a modern Assassin’s Creed experience that combines parkour, stealth, and even Watch Dogs’ hacking gameplay. This would keep Watch Dogs’ spirit alive while offering a new type of experience for Assassin’s Creed.
