Mafia: The Old Country has been very hyped among fans, especially due to its more linear approach to the franchise and a $50 price tag, unlike most modern AAA games. The game finally revealed its gameplay in new footage released yesterday, and many compared the 2K title to Uncharted.
However, the overall reception of the footage has been mixed at best, and a lot of fans are rather disappointed in the gameplay, calling Mafia: The Old Country a very generic title.
Why This Matters: Mafia is a tentpole AAA franchise, and another middling entry won’t do it any favors after the average third title.
The 13-minute gameplay footage has failed to drum up interest among fans, with one fan on the Mafia subreddit saying they were glad not to order the game. Mafia has never been a groundbreaking franchise, but fans are still disappointed to see nothing new of note in the gameplay footage.
Fans stated that there is nothing worthy of discussion in the new gameplay footage, with everything being rather generic, even the graphics. The franchise has always relied heavily on its story and unique settings to make a mark, and gamers think Mafia: The Old Country will have a similar task.
Many fans were even harsher on the gameplay, saying that it resembles Mafia 3, a game that is almost 10 years old. Others pointed out it looked like a 2013 video game and also noticed a graphical downgrade compared to the trailer, which is an indictment for a game built in Unreal Engine 5.
Hence, the overall sentiment regarding Mafia: The Old Country is that it’s a generic action game that definitely won’t blow you away, but considering how it will retail at $50, it might not be a major problem.
Mafia: The Old Country is set to launch in August and with a less bloated open world, the adventure title will offer a more linear experience.
