Arguably one of the most anticipated titles in the gaming world right now is The Witcher 4, the sequel to the 2015 game, which will make Ciri the central protagonist of the franchise. Information on the project has been scarce up till now, with a tentative release date of 2027 in the mind of CD Projekt Red.
However, we have gotten tidbits on how the game will compare to other projects in the franchise, and a new interview from The Witcher 4’s director has given us further insight into how the RPG will function.
Why This Matters: An RPG giving players freedom to choose between morally ambiguous choices is a step in the right direction for the genre.
While talking to IGN, Sebastian Kalemba, the game’s director, stated that player agency and freedom are the focal points of the team’s development of The Witcher 4. They want players to feel the choices they make and the consequences they will have.
The director further explained that the players will have more opportunities and tools to make the gameplay experience their own, giving The Witcher 4 the most player control and freedom in the franchise and allowing players to define their story.
We want to give players more tools, more opportunities, to be able to feel that ‘I am the player and I define my experience.’
Furthermore, Kalemba spoke on choices in the RPG, saying he wants the player to be okay with the consequences, making them feel rewarding even if the ending is sad. The director also stated that the choices will have more depth, with good choices leading to bad results and bad decisions having some justification behind them.
