- EA cancels two projects within Respawn Entertainment.
- The developer studio was also hit with a layoff across the Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi teams.
- They now plan to focus solely on Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi franchises.
Update: IGN has just provided additional information to this report. According to them, roughly 100 developers within Respawn Entertainment were affected by this restructuring. This includes a mix of developers, QA testers, and publishing all across Respawn Entertainment. Some workers have now been moved to other EA teams, such as Battlefield and Iron Man.
The Original Report Follows:
Currently, only a handful of studios under EA are keeping the publisher alive, and among them is Respawn Entertainment, known for their work on the Titanfall and Star Wars Jedi franchise.
While the studio holds great potential, it’s unfortunate that EA doesn’t recognize it, as Respawn Entertainment is the latest victim of another wave of layoffs. Moreover, two unannounced projects from the studio are now canceled, as they have decided to shift their focus solely to Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi.
Why it matters: Layoffs have become a growing concern within the gaming industry. For such a prospering studio, cutting down the workforce isn’t a good sign.
In their latest social media post, Respawn announced this news. According to the post, the canceled projects were still in incubation, but nevertheless, it’s unfortunate to see this happen.
While the studio hasn’t revealed which projects they were working on, Titanfall 3 is one of them that comes to mind. The title has been rumored to be in development for quite some time now.
The studio recently canceled yet another project around last month. However, it wasn’t made official, so it was likely a part of the project mentioned above.
Respawn has also laid off developers working on Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi game, thanked them for their contributions, and is offering them meaningful support.
Moving forward, the developer will double down on its competitive focus for Apex Legends, which is also reported to get a 2.0 update, completely revamping the game.
Additionally, a new Star Wars Jedi game is being developed and is set to “raise the bar again for storytelling and gameplay.”
