The Game Keeps Winning, As Developers Suffer Layoffs!

Story Highlight
  • Marvel Rivals has now reached over 40 million players, as confirmed by NetEase in a recent financial report.
  • The live service behemoth saw over 10 million users register during its first three days, suggesting it had a stellar launch.
  • The tidbit was discovered at a sensitive time since the company also laid off some developers despite enjoying a lot of success.

Live service titles have become a huge hit-and-miss in the gaming scene, with many studios trying to catch this lightning in a bottle. Almost every attempt fails, but those who succeed reach impossible milestones. Marvel Rivals is one such example.

Now, NetEase has confirmed that the live service giant has reached over 40 million players to date. That’s not all; Marvel Rivals saw 10 million players register just in the first three days of the game’s launch.

Why it matters: Marvel Rivals hitting such a massive milestone confirms that it’s not the live service genre gamers hate but how most developers execute it.

In NetEase’s latest Q4 2024 financial report, the studio highlights that Marvel Rivals has secured yet another accolade. The conglomerate’s net revenue has also surpassed $2.9 billion because of how well its products have performed.

Marvel Rivals printed $100 million in revenue during its first month alone. Its launch also saw over 644K active players, and the numbers have only grown. The hero shooter has impacted the genre so much that Overwatch 2 saw massive declines after its release.

However, despite these milestones, NetEase laid off several staff of the Seattle-based team in a controversial move.

Marvel Rivals has proven to be one of the most successful free-to-play games of this year.
Marvel Rivals has completely surpassed all expectations since its launch.

NetEase explained that these layoffs were necessary to organize the development structure of Marvel Rivals since the studio is possibly scaling back its developmental efforts in North America.

Do you think the game will continue to climb the players and sales milestones in the coming few months, or will they finally stagnate? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
