The PlayStation Project Q was revealed during the PlayStation Showcase as a streaming device for existing PS5 owners. Unlike other handhelds, it includes controllers with features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
A few months after the official reveal, three images of the recently announced PlayStation Project Q gaming handheld have been leaked.
Why it matters: The handheld is one of the new hardware offerings from Sony. It is also the gaming giant’s first handheld since the PS Vita in 2011.
The most important detail from the leaked images confirms that the handheld will run on Android OS.
Furthermore, a tear-down of the handheld is also shown, but it does not provide much detail regarding the internal hardware of the upcoming PlayStation Project Q. Nonetheless, the Android OS could lead to interesting developments for the handheld down the line.
With Project Q excluding a custom operating system, unlike previous handhelds, users might find a way to use other streaming applications like GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud. This would allow it to be a more versatile device.
As mentioned earlier, the handheld will come equipped with a DualSense controller. This would make it perfect as a streaming handheld if users can mod the device to run other applications.
While other devices on the market can already serve this purpose, the superior DualSense controller would make it more enjoyable to use the PlayStation Project Q for games across various platforms.
The PlayStation Project Q is shaping up to be an interesting device. However, the device is reported to have an average battery life that can only stream for a maximum of three to four hours. This is much worse than the twelve hours of battery on the Logitech G Cloud.
Currently, not much is known about the internal hardware of the handheld. Being a streaming device running on Android OS, the PlayStation Project Q is likely to include decent specifications. This could also allow users to transform it into an Android retro gaming device.
