Both the giants of console industry are working for a new, high-end console featuring better hardware that would be released next year. Development of the upgraded, 4K capable consoles from both the companies was rumored for a long time over the internet after which Sony’s president officially confirmed the development of PlayStation 4 Neo while Microsoft also revealed the concept of Project Scorpio and called it as the ‘most powerful console ever built‘ during this year’s E3 press conference.
Project Scorpio: Microsoft Believes This Might Be The Last Generation Console
Both the companies are working not for a new generation console, but on the hardware upgrades of their current generation consoles which were released almost three years ago. Most of the console gamers didn’t like the idea behind hardware upgrades on the console as both the last generation consoles lasted for almost 7 to 8 years. The idea of mid-cycle upgrades is mostly familiar with the PC gaming industry instead, with the more better, upgraded hardwares being released. With Microsoft releasing Xbox One S and working on Project Scorpio indicates the future of console gaming, especially for the Xbox maybe similar with the PC gaming.
During the interview with Engadget, Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft’s head of Xbox games marketing was asked regarding the future of Xbox and its upgrades, and whether it is the last console generation. Greenberg responded with;
I think it is. … For us, we think the future is without console generations; we think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware — we’re making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio. We’re basically saying, “This isn’t a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.” We think of this as a family of devices.
Apparently, Microsoft itself isn’t sure about the future of consoles with the hardware upgrades getting released. He did mention that people seem to be more interested with the Project Scorpio and ‘it’s going to be a pretty big success‘. Furthermore, he also said that the future of console gaming will be changed forever if things go the way it seems i.e., hardware upgrades for the consoles.
