Nvidia has introduced a new GPU series that will bring the gaming on battery in acceptable ranges. The Battery Boost feature reduces the frame rate to the desired value, thereby saving energy when the reserves are sufficient.

Nvidia’s new GPU series GeForce 800M is designed primarily for notebook players who want to enjoy the pure Gaming Experience. The family released seven GPU models, four of which Battery Boost Technology dominates: Geforce GTX 850M, 860M, 870M and 880M, the top model. The entry-level models 820M, 830M and 840M without a preceding GTX not dominate the energy-saving function and are designed for budget notebooks.

The battery Boost is basically a new way in which Nvidia is trying to limit the power consumption in the Gaming Mode when the battery is running. The user chooses a frame rate from that which he wants to play and the driver then limits the computation of images in order to conserve battery power. With appropriate reserves Nvidia expects at best a doubling of battery life.

For the battery Boost, the requirements of the game should not be too high. A strategy game can be, for example, certainly with less than 20 frames per second play. When 3D shooter it should be more like 30 fps, the default setting of the Nvidia driver for the battery. Nvidia’s Optimus technology for switching between graphics cores support the new models also.
