Dolby Atmos is one of the best immersive audio technologies that can be found in the most advanced cinemas, because it is based on a hybrid mixing system where sound moves around you in three-dimensional space, so you feel like you’re inside the action.

Dolby Atmos will be compatible with Windows 10 and Xbox One

Spencer Hooks, director of Dolby games Laboratories announced an alliance with Microsoft that will make the Xbox One first compatible console with the Dolby Atmos sound system. Hooks explained that this technology “will enhance the gaming experience to make them richer and enthralling” with  more accurate sound in the game.

Mike Ybarra,  Xbox’s Head of Platform Engineering, said of the partnership:

At Team Xbox, we are all gamers first, and bringing Dolby Atmos support to Xbox One and Windows 10 gaming next year will bring you even further inside the action and sound of your favorite titles. A big thank you to the team at Dolby for their partnership; we’re excited to share more with the Xbox community next year.

To do this, according to Dolby, only you need a pair of headphones focused on the gaming industry, as the vast majority of these can enable this experience (either real or virtual), or some specific speakers or compatible with the Dolby Atmos technology. At the moment this feature is only available for users of the Preview program in the app Blu-ray. That is why next year Microsoft will reveal an official date for Xbox One and also the Windows 10 operating system for the availability of Atmos support.

Xbox Preview members can also make use of the Bitstream feature immediately before it rolls out to the wider public next year. Microsoft has provided the following instructions:

  • Ensure your console is connected via HDMI to a device that supports decoding of Blu-ray audio formats.
  • Make sure you have the latest Blu-ray player by checking the “Updates” tab under “My Games & Apps.”
  • Enable “Let my receiver decode audio (beta)” under the “Disc & Blu-ray” settings page.
  • Insert your favourite DVD or Blu-ray disc.
  • Kick back and enjoy the highest quality audio from your movies and TV shows.
