Without much ado AMD is preparing its Radeon R9 380X will seek to compete with the GeForce GTX 970 from NVIDIA. The new GPU is based on Tonga Graphics core manufactured at 28nm process node with the latest architecture Graphics CoreNext 1.2 giving a total of 2048 Stream Processors with 128 TMUs and 32 ROPs that come along 6 GB of GDDR5 memory manufactured by Samsung with memory interface of 256 bits yields a bandwidth of 192 GB / s.

In terms of performance, under the benchmarking software 3DMark 11 Extreme Card threw 4024 points with a Core i5. When compared to the Radeon R9 290, we find a score of 4200 points and 3300 from a Radeon R9 280x, it is expected that the GPU will be based on the Tonga XT with the GCN 1.2 architecture and performance will be near to the Radeon R9 290 and try to compete with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 in most cases.


Overall, AMD looks to have  a winner in his midrange with this card. Depending on the price, the 380X can steal some market share back from NVIDIA which has a sizable gap between the 970 and 960 in terms of performance.
