The Chinese manufacturer Bitmain today announced the Antminer E9, its new ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) for crypto mining.
The Antminer E9 is an ASIC that offers up to 3 Gigahashes / s, which is equivalent to 32 GeForce RTX 3080 combined and running on a single cluster. The Antminer E9 will launch soon, but the company did not provide a launch date or price for the machine itself. Due to the global shortage of components, the price of the machine is likely to be very high as well, but still much more profitable than buying the 32 RTX 3080 graphics cards.
Compared to existing solutions, an ASIC machine called the Linzhi Phoenix Miner can only deliver 2.6 Gh / s and costs between $ 13,300 and $ 13,700, which means the Antminer E9 will easily cost at least that amount, or even a a little more.
The Antminer E9, on the other hand will also be more energy efficient than any existing solution. Compared to 32 RTX 3080 graphics cards, which would draw around 7,500 watts, the E9 only requires 2,556 watts, according to the promo video. The energy efficiency will be even better than the Pheonix miner, which requires 3000 W and offers a lower hash rate.
The Antminer E9 is not expected to alter the current situation in the global GPU market too much (in terms of vastly disproportionate stock and prices) as a large supply of these devices would be required to meet the global demand from Ethereum farms. The situation is still so bad that Chinese miners are still buying up every stock of new gaming laptops, just to use their discrete GPUs for crypto mining.
