The announcement was made by Fred Chesnais, CEO of Atari, which confirmed to the GamesBeat website that “we’re back in the hardware business,” (consoles). He declined to disclose any kind of information regarding the console, but he said it is based on PC technology. Currently we know that the new console will share the same architecture used by the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, i.e. it will use x86 PC hardware, but still we don’t have details on if it will be AMD or NVIDIA to provide their graphics.

Chesnais said that Atari’s revival is well under way. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2013, but Chesnais bought it and pledged to make it great again. The company is now profitable, and it is engaged in making mobile games. It is licensing its brands more widely, such as licensing its Atari name for the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 movie.

Just before the announcement, the company made a little noise by publishing a teaser of what is now called “Ataribox“, so let’s hope that company will soon reveal new information on the next-Gen Atari gaming console. One thing is for sure at the moment that this time they need better luck to win the market already dominated by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
