This morning, at an event held in San Francisco, AMD officials spoke about AMD Zen and revealed new details about the Summit Ridge platform. During the event, AMD demonstrated how an AMD Zen CPU equipped with 8 Cores and 16 threads offered a fairly similar performance to Intel Core i7 processor with Broadwell-E architecture (LGA2011-3) equipped with 8 cores and 16 threads. For performance testing, the company used Blender rendering software where both CPUs working at the same frequency of 3.00 GHz. AMD also impressed the world by showing its first Naples processor, consisting of no less than 32 Zen cores with 64 threads.

AMD also confirmed that the Summit Ridge platform will use a new army of motherboards based on the new AM4 socket to be joined by DDR4 DIMM slots, PCI-Express 3.0 slots and a whole cast of connections such as the M.2, U.2, SATA-Express, NVMe drives, or USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt 3.0. The new socket will support AMD AM4 7th Generation A-Series processors, Codenamed Bristol Ridge. These motherboards will arrive during the second half of 2016.

AMD ZEN DESIGN

Most impressive of all is that the AMD Zen 8 Core tested processor has a TDP of 95W, while the Bristol Bridge variant (APUs with integrated graphics) of 4 cores have a TDP of 65W. Even more impressive is the TDP of Naples, where its 32 cores only consume 180W, compared to 150W of its variant with 24 cores. To get an idea, the Intel Core i7-6900K (Broadwell-E @ 14nm 8 – core) has a TDP of 140W, and of course, a price of 1144 euros.
