The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is AMD’s last hurrah before it switches over to the newer AM5 platform based on 5nm Zen 4 architecture. AMD has claimed that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the fastest processor in the world for gaming, with an all-new 3D V-Cache that adds 64 MB of L3 cache; the processor is said to be quite an upgrade over processors out right now to compete with Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake series until the arrival of Ryzen 7000 series processors.

XanxoGaming, a Peruvian website, has gotten their hands on the brand new processors. Previously, they released synthetic benchmarks like Cinebench, but now they have released gaming benchmarks across various games. The processor is still under NDA, but XanxoGaming does not fall under the review embargos (blocked by AMD) since they managed to buy a retail unit in their country.

The testing was done using a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founder’s Edition across AMD and Intel systems. Surprisingly, XanxoGaming chose to go with DDR4 ram for the i9 12900KF, but they have stated that they intend to test with DDR5 later. The gaming benchmarks were carried out at 1080p and 720p resolutions to test the difference between the two CPUs.

The list of games in the test included the following

  • Borderlands 3 (DX12)
  • Control (DX12)
  • Death Stranding
  • F1 2020
  • FFXV
  • Metro Exodus
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider (DX12)
  • The Witcher 3
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins
  • Strange Brigade (DX12 – Async ON)
  • Shadow of War

Here are the benchmarks from the testing at 1080p resolution:

With reference to the above 1080p benchmarks, there isn’t a huge difference on average between the processors. However, a few outliers benefit significantly from the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Around 29% lead in FFXV over the 12900KF, while in Shadow of The Tomb Raider and The Witcher 3, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D leads with an average of 10% and 22%, respectively. On average, the processor is about 6-7% faster than Intel’s offering, primarily due to the big outliers.

It is clear that the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is an impressive piece of technology; while the 3D V-Cache might not be as big of a game-changer as expected, the games that can take advantage of this innovation show impressive results from AMD’s side. Though the performance difference between the two isn’t huge, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D at $449 is over $100 cheaper than Intel’s processor. This would make it ideal for people planning to stay with the AM4 platform while also looking to get the best-performing processor. However, those with the Intel i9 12900KF should not be looking to upgrade as the benchmarks show very similar results across most of the games tested.
