The NVIDIA GTX 980 is currently the most powerful single-processor graphics card available in the market. But it seems that this title would soon pick up by the upcoming Next Generation Graphics Card from AMD, at least unofficial tests indicate performance.
One of the forum members of ChipHell praised the performance tests of the mysterious video card, code-named “Captain Jack” – no doubt it refers to a series of movie Pirates of the Caribbean, and therefore suspect accelerator can also belong to the generation of AMD Pirate Islands. What model is it exactly? We do not know, but the performance and power consumption points are indicating something with the highest quality. It is very possible that this is the AMD Radeon R9 390X.
AMD Radeon R9 390X – Performance Allegedly Leaked, 197W TDP and Faster than GTX 980
Well, the average performance of the card (estimated on the basis of tests conducted in several games at a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels @MAX graphics settings) is impressive – compared to the Radeon R9 290X performance you can count on higher by about 30%, and compared to the model GeForce GTX 980 by almost 16%. So it appears that the upcoming bad boy from the AMD side would grab the faster single-processor Graphics card place from Nvidia. The alleged Radeon R9 390X has an average performance rating of 65.6 FPS across all titles while the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 has a performance rating of 56.6 FPS. The GeForce GTX 780 Ti and Radeon R9 290X end up with 52.6 FPS and 50.1 FPS respectively.
According to the previous rumors, the GPU will also feature 4GB of 3D stacked HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) modules clocked at 1.25GHz. According to the experts HBM is almost 5x faster than GDDR5.
If we talk about the power consumption, it is also very impressive, because when you run the card on average it takes 197 watts – little more than a competitive GeForce GTX 980 (based on a very energy-efficient architecture Maxwell), and at the same time by almost 80 less than the Radeon R9 290X Uber mode. We must therefore admit that the new design has made very good progress in terms of energy efficiency.
It is worth noting that the disclosed information is unofficial. So take this news with a pinch of salt. We are waiting for further news about the mysterious AMD card.
