Just today, May 20, a patent has come to light in the United States Patent Applications Office in which AMD names its technology ‘Gaming Super Resolution‘ (GSR) formerly known as FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), that is, the counterpart to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS).
This technology is crucial for AMD, since in GeForce GPUs it is an enormous incentive that allows impressive numbers in terms of performance, and it is a very interesting technology, especially in mid-range GPUs and low to provide that extra fluidity necessary in the absence of power.
The patent reveals that the GSR would rely on interference to scale the images. AMD explains that currently available approaches use linear scaling functions, but this approach can lead to blurry or corrupted images, because it does not take advantage of non-linear information. Additionally, AMD engineers claim that conventional neural networks are generalizable and are trained to operate without significant knowledge of the immediate problem.
“The GSR architecture employs image condensation and a combination of linear and non-linear operations to accelerate the process to levels viable for games. GSR renders images at a low-quality scale to create high-quality image approximations and achieve high frame rates.
High-quality reference images are approximated by applying a specific configuration of convolutional layers and trigger functions to a low-quality reference image. The GSR network approximates more generalized problems with greater precision and efficiency than conventional super-resolution techniques, training the weights of the convolutional layers with a corpus of images. “
Obviously, what matters is that when this technology will arrive, because DLSS 2.0 arrived in March 2020 and it has been improving more and more and in recent months many games are implementing this technology. While on AMD side, red camp was supposed to announced this technology before the launch of the Radeon RX 6000 (October 2020), and that never happened, while it is only known that it will come out sometime this year.
