In the past year or so, AMD has achieved initial success with its “game changing” Mantle API, we have seen lots of games on which AMD Mantle has been implemented like Battlefield 4, Thief 4 and Dragon Age inquisition lots of other games demonstrate the power of Mantle. But now Microsoft’s DirectX 12 (hereinafter referred to as DX12) came, its features are almost same as AMD Mantle, but DX12 will undoubtedly get more support than Mantle. Now, Mantle’s mission seems to be ending, AMD itself suggested that Mantle 1.0 developers interested in turning to DX12 or OpenGL as soon as possible.

AMD Mantle 1.0 is dead, please turn to Microsoft’s DirectX 12

AMD visual / perceptual computing business, senior vice president Raja Koduri recently in the official website  talks about the progress and future of Mantle, Mantle beginning certainly wants to commend the achievements of some, they are proud of it. However, after playfully also need to reflect, especially Mantle future positioning.

Now DX12 and OpenGL Next Era’s coming, AMD said they helped to develop a new era of API on both contributed, while AMD’s development partners are now turning to these two API, so in 2015 things would be changed for Mantle.

  • AMD will continue to support our trusted partners that have committed to Mantle in future projects, like Battlefield™ Hardline, with all the resources at our disposal.
  • The Mantle definition of “open” must widen. It already has, in fact. This vital effort has replaced our intention to release a public Mantle SDK, and you will learn the facts on Thursday, March 5 at GDC 2015.
  • Mantle must take on new capabilities and evolve beyond mastery of the draw call. It will continue to serve AMD as a graphics innovation platform available to select partners with custom needs.

Note: already registered developers and partners can still get Mantle SDK, but if you are interested in the function of Mantle 1.0, we recommend that you put the focus turned to DX12 and OpenGL Next.

Take a look at what is basically the meaning of AMD executives at the end – First of all, the game already supports Mantle, AMD will try to help. Second, that it would launch before the public version of the Mantle SDK, so you can make outside of NVIDIA, AMD, Intel platform also benefit, but now there are more important things to replace this plan, so AMD will not be pushed open Mantle SDK version up.

Mantle platform needs a new feature, but this is the goal, yet it is not clear that what AMD will add as a new feature.

In short, AMD executives’ statements for Mantle Joy is greater than sorrow – under DX12 and OpenGL Next gain wider support for the case, AMD independent Mantle push more and more difficult, nor the necessity, so AMD has begun to abandon the public version Mantle SDK.

Still, we can’t say something about the bright future of Mantle, but no matter the outcome, we should not forget the contribution made by Mantle – it will not only allow AMD graphics card to run faster, but it appears to also provide a guideline for the entire industry, Mantle with to the effect like “catfish effect”, stimulated the development of DX12 and OpenGL Next, while AMD is a close partner in both the open API, to make a contribution.
