Through the official Age of Empires website, Xbox Games Studios gave a brief summary of what the year has been like with the launch of Age of Empires: III Definitive Edition, the numerous updates to Age of Empires: II Definitive Edition, and clearly, the progress they have made for the future release of Age of Empires 4.
They also indicated that Age of Empires 4 is now playable and that they are in the final stage, which involves balancing everything and polishing the game to reach its Gold phase. It should be remembered that the game still lacks a release date, although it is expected to be released sometime in 2021.
We are making great progress in Age of Empires IV. I don’t want to make you jealous, but we are literally playing this game every day, both in Washington and Vancouver.
Developing an RTS is fun – it takes a while to build the systems separately (AI, economy, simulation, rendering, etc.), and then it takes a while for them to come together. But when they do, all of a sudden you have a game, a game that needs debugging and balancing along with a final polish, but you essentially know the game you’re going to ship. And the best part is that it feels like an Age of Empires game.
Our partners at Relic have been incredible banners, as we have all migrated development from the office to the home, and modified (through trial and error) our processes to help facilitate productivity to keep the game on track. So much passion, so great developers, artists, designers, storytellers, audio experts and community, not to mention the backbone functions that keep the company going.
